Lawsuits: Scientology's Narconon-Arrowhead Counselors Traded Sex for Drugs

narconon arrowhead investigation
SCIENTOLOGY DRUG REHAB CENTER HIT WITH FIVE MORE LAWSUITS

Narconon Arrowhead Rehab Center
Underground Bunker [MAR.21.13] ~ Scientology’s troubled flagship drug rehab facility in Oklahoma — Narconon Arrowhead — was hit with five additional lawsuits today, all filed by Gary Richardson, the attorney who is handling four other wrongful death and fraud suits against the center.

Three deaths at the facility in nine months (the last in July 2012) has resulted in local and state investigations, the Oklahoma legislature is this week considering a new bill to tighten regulation of the facility, and earlier this month Narconon Arrowhead’s CEO, Gary Smith, had his drug counselor certification permanently revoked.

And today, Gary Richardson filed five additional lawsuits against the facility, each of which is alleging that Narconon is a fraudulent business that advertises bogus success rates. Each of the suits names Narconon Arrowhead, Narconon International, and Scientology’s “good works” umbrella non-profit, the Association for Better Living and Education. [continued@tonyortega.org]

Lawsuits allege Narconon Arrowhead counselors traded sex for drugs

mcalesternews.com [MAR.22.13] ~ Narconon Arrowhead counselors allegedly traded drugs for sex and fraudulently charged a patients credit card some $14,500 according to allegations found in five lawsuits filed Thursday against the facility.
The lawsuits were filed Thursday in Pittsburg County District Court.
Also among the allegations the suits say Narconon influenced a grandmother to take out a $7,000 loan to “save her grandson’s life” and Narconon charged some $14,500 to a credit card obtained without the cardholders knowledge. [continued@mcalesternews.com]

Attorney For Paitents That Died At Narconon-Arrowhead, Speaks Out [video]

narconon arrowhead investigation

newson6.com [MAR.11.13] ~ News9 talked with the attorney representing families for three of Narconon's most recent deaths.. And he had some insight into why the counseling certifications may have been revoked.

"I couldn't begin to tell you the stories I've heard of what goes on down there," said attorney, Gary Richardson. And Richardson says he's heard plenty of them. "They say 76 percent success rate, when there is no way, and when they get into the way they calculate that, then you get to see how ridiculous that is," Richardson said.

Richardson represents families of Narconon's three most recent deaths. All three filed wrongful death lawsuits against the Narconon Arrowhead rehab facility near McAlester. The families blame the staff. "It was joke to even think they had counselors to begin with. So when I started seeing that their certifications had been pulled, it wasn't a surprise at all," said Richardson. [continued @ newson6.com]

Scientology's Narconon Arrowhead Exec Loses Drug Certification

narconon arrowhead investigation
Gary W Smith - Narconon Arrowhead
mcalesternews.com — Narconon Arrowhead’s top executive and several of his employees have had a counseling certification revoked by the National Association of Forensic Counselors, officials say. Karla Taylor, president of NAFC, confirmed Narconon Arrowhead CEO Gary Smith’s certification and those of several Narconon employees was revoked earlier this month.

“All members of the NAFC must abide by the NAFC ethical standards as well as the ethical codes within their profession,” Taylor said. She also said because the certifications were revoked and not suspended that Smith would not be eligible to be recertified. [continued]

Mary Rieser - Narconon Georgia
tonyortega.org - The NAFC’s CEO and president, Karla Taylor, confirmed today that her organization has sent out letters that suspend or revoke Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor (CCDC) certifications to numerous employees of Narconon programs in Oklahoma and Georgia —

Two facilities that have been the center of controversy after patient deaths, criminal investigations, and multiple lawsuits. Taylor says she has confirmation that Smith has received his revocation notice.

Mary Rieser has also lost her CCDC, but the former Narconon Georgia executive director may have bigger problems with the state continuing a criminal insurance fraud probe of the facility. [continued]

Another Lawsuit Filed Against Scientology's Narconon-Arrowhead

narconon arrowhead investigation

Narconon Arrowhead
mcalesternews.com [NOV.26.12] A lawsuit was filed today against Narconon Arrowhead by a man who suffered from the same disease as a woman who was found dead at the facility earlier this year.
The suit was filed in Pittsburg County District Court by 21-year-old William Scott a former patient of the facility who has a medical condition called from Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which requires daily medication, according to the lawsuit.
The condition is also the same that of 21-year-old Hillary Holten who was found dead at the facility in April.
Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Narconon of Oklahoma doing business as Narconon Arrowhead, an Oklahoma corporation; Narconon International, a foreign corporation based in California; Association for Better Living and  Education International, a foreign corporation based in California; and Gerald D. Wootan, DO, M.Ed., medical director of Narconon of Oklahoma. [more@mcalesternews.com]

3rd Lawsuit Filed Against Scientology's Narconon-Arrowhead in Oklahoma

narconon arrowhead investigation
Graves was found dead in his bed at Narconon Arrowhead on Oct. 26, 2011
Gabriel Graves
newsok.com [OCT.25.12] The mother of a Tulsa County man who died while undergoing drug rehabilitation treatment at Narconon Arrowhead in Pittsburg County has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the corporation. The latest lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Pittsburg County District Court by Shirley Gilliam, the mother of Gabriel Graves, 32.

Graves was found dead in his bed at Narconon Arrowhead on Oct. 26, 2011.
Gilliam says that Narconon Arrowhead treatments rely on the written “technology” of L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, “despite the fact that Hubbard had no known training or education in the field of drug or alcohol rehabilitation.”

During Graves' stay at Narconon Arrowhead, he “repeatedly evidenced symptoms of feeling ill, headaches and vomiting,” but was never referred to a physician, Gilliam alleges.
Graves was found dead the day after he complained of a terrible headache following sauna treatments, the lawsuit says.

Narconon Arrowhead
Narconon Arrowhead
Graves asked for over-the-counter pain relief and permission to see a physician, but was denied both and advised to return to the sauna, the lawsuit alleges.
Gerald D. Wootan, a Tulsa County osteopathic physician and Narconon of Oklahoma's medical director, also is named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
Gilliam alleges Wootan failed to adequately monitor the treatment of patients, including the use of high doses of niacin.

Narconon of Oklahoma “fraudulently misrepresents to potential students that a physician is on staff 24 hours a day. Instead, a physician is present only once a week,” the lawsuit claims. [continued@newsok.com]

911 Calls & Dead Patient's Father Opinion of Narconon Arrowhead

narconon arrowhead investigation

Dead Patient's Father Narconon Shocked by Scientology Belief
KRMG news talk radio
krmg.com [OCT.10.12] Father whose daughter died of an apparent drug overdose while at a drug treatment facility says he wants the place fixed or shut down and he wants the world to know about its roots in the Church of Scientology and what that organization's beliefs entail.

"You believe they have a 24-hour physician in the building and all these nurses in the building, (that's) what you hear when they say they have a 24-hour staff. Well in actuality they have'em on staff, but they're not in the premises," he says.

Stacy Murphy at Scientology's Narconon Arrowhesd
Murphy's death is listed as "unattended," which would back up Robert Murphy's contention that his daughter was left in a room alone where she passed away from what appears to have been a drug overdose.

The "on staff" medical personnel were apparently never notified.
"They had her for ten-plus hours where they knew she was in an OD (overdose) situation and nobody did anything. No monitoring of her, no physician was called, no 911, didn't call her parents, nothing. Just put her in a room and left her to die," he told KRMG.

Now, he says, he has a much darker opinion of Scientology and how he believes the "church" uses Narconon to gain followers and their money. "My opinion, it's a scam. It's just a way to draw money in and make you pay to achieve higher levels of their 'consciousness,' of their 'past lives.'"

"This is just science fiction. They believe in aliens that brought us here from other planets millions and millions of years ago. The things I've learned, it is so mind boggling that people, if you tell them, they just think you're making things up." [continued@krmg.com]

Documents confirm the sheriff’s office responding to patients being held against their will at the Scientology rehab compound in Canadian, Oklahoma.

In some cases, the officers intervened by entering the center and waiting with distraught patients until their parents or sponsor could safely pick them up without interference from Narconon Arrowhead’s staff.

Other 911 emergency calls detail searches for smuggled-in illegal drugs and several fires near cabins. More 911 call details later this week. [continued@examiner.com]

OK Legislator Wants More Oversight After Narconon Arrowhead Deaths

narconon arrowhead investigation

tulsabeacon [Oct.03.12]  A local lawmaker disturbed by suspicious practices of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in his county of Pittsburg plans to eliminate a loophole which allowed centers deemed “nonmedical” to operate without any state oversight.

In response to the recent deaths at Narconon Arrowhead, recently Rep. Brian Renegar, D-McAlester, requested the House of Representatives legal staff to draft legislation to require that nonmedical treatment centers must receive oversight and certification from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

NBC Rock Center Narconon Arrowhead
As Narconon expanded its treatment to include non-Indians, they attempted and ultimately failed to receive certification from Oklahoma’s Department of Mental Health, which denied them on the basis that there was no credible evidence that the program was effective for chemical dependency.

At the time, however, the state allowed for the center to get an exemption from certification when Narconon went instead to a private group, the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) based out of Arizona, for approval.

State law later changed wherein the CARF certification alone was no longer sufficient to satisfy state licensing issues. The Department of Mental Health acknowledged the CARF approval, but only as it applied to the first of Narconon’s four steps in its treatment program - the non-medical withdrawal phase.

Lacking proper certification was Narconon’s practice of rehabilitating people with substance abuse issues with saunas, vitamins and minerals.

Narconon officials have declined comment in the deaths beyond expressing sympathy for the families involved. In July, Murphy’s death caused officials to take a closer look into the deaths of two others who died while patients of the facility in a span of less than a year.

In July, the District 18 First Assistant District Attorney Richard Hull said the results would take four to six weeks.
Now, more than eight weeks later, officials are still awaiting for the results.
“We haven’t received anything yet,” said Joel Kerns, Pittsburg County Sheriff.
Kerns said after he receives the medical examiners’ reports, he will pass the  results to the DA’s office and to determine whether charges will be filed.

mcalesternews.com June 23 ~ The grieving mother of a 32- year-old man who died at Narconon Arrowhead joined a group of protesters called “Mothers against Narconon” on Saturday.

Shirley Graves, mother of Gabriel Graves who died at facility in October, stood silently holding a poster with picture of her son with several others were stationed at the Arrowhead Park Ranger station, less than a mile from the Narconon facility.

During the demonstration, a moment of silence was interrupted when a photographer from the direction of the Narconon facility proceeded to closely photograph Graves mother while she held the American flag and a picture of her deceased son.

cult sign held by protester in london When we say that we got support at this raid, you have no idea. People said how they'd missed us, a few people stayed and chatted for ages, we had 3 photographers come just for pics of the miniraid (one of which was our friend DN-Photos on Flickr), a guy bought us all coffee and said he was proud of us and the list goes on.
A decent turn-out considering that this was fairly improptu, 400+ fliers given out and I think we have some pretty awesome footage.

Altogether; LOLdon is winning again.

Montreal, Canada: Mask Fine Test

David Love and Anonymous protest Scientology in Montreal Canada Montreal Anonymous protest looked pretty bleak at first, with only two of us at the beginning. Then more began appearing and we had a total of ten happy, frisky Anons. Volumes of flyers handed out to public.
This was a test protest to see if Montreal Police would hand out $500.00 fines for wearing Masks. A new Montreal City by-law prohibits the wearing of masks at any protest where there are more than three people.
A Case was filed by myself (David Love) recently with the Quebec Human Rights Commission - RE: Namely, the City of Montreal and Montreal Police are in breach of numerous Charter Violations - government is investigating and I expect an amendment soon - - with NO fines in the interim.

Chicago: Double Secret Chalk Raid

protesters in front of chicago scientology We basically spent the entire raid chalking the sidewalk and waiting for Domenic to come out and douse the sidewalk over and over and over again. SS, dude, you gotta do Dra's suggestion about the video and music. High hilarity.

Let's see. Well, when you're chalking and Domenic is throwing water at you time flies. We did have a pretty strong police response not too long after we go there. Four squad cars pulled up, with about five officers eventually standing in front of the Org.

Man, it was just like the old days! When the one officer gave us the standard instruction about not blocking sidewalk traffic he added in a little note about not stretching in front of the Org. No stretching? Yep. So of course I did some stretching later on.

At the end of the raid we spotted three kids wearing what looked to be EPF variant clothing. I followed towards the back door but they ran inside. SS should have some video of what they looked like for all of you. That was a blast! I wish every raid could be that much fun! [more photos]

Berlin: Christopher Street Day / Flash Raid
WWP ~ Christopher Street Day 2012 June 23rd
Anonymous visited the Christopher Street Day 2012 in Berlin at June 23rd in Berlin. We had a huge banner, many informative flyers and pots of „Peeeeenis“-stickers.It was a heady atmosphere, many people gave us positive reactions, some were even enthusiastic.
Anonymous set an example and advocated acceptance and tolerance regarding trans-, metro-, bi- … and homosexuals. Scientology however is a homophobic cult and sees homosexuals as sexually perverted people.
The flyers gave the reader a lot of information about the homophobia the Cult of Scientology is preaching. And there – of course – was no Scientology-vehicle at the Christopher Street day although Scientology is (according to themselves) a connecting and tolerant “religion”. Weird, huh? Narconon Arrowhead

therepublic.com [May 04] OKLAHOMA CITY — The state medical examiner's office wants to take a deeper look at the deaths of two people at a drug rehabilitation center that uses saunas and vitamins as part of an intensive cleansing regimen.

Last month, 21-year-old Hillary Holten died at the Narconon Arrowhead center at Canadian. Last October, 32-year-old Gabriel Graves died. The rehab facility uses techniques developed by Scientology founder and science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and is the training center for Narconon International. Health officials in Quebec closed a Narconon facility last month.

villagevoice.com [Apr 20] ~ ...Many members of Anonymous who have supported Love over the last two and a half years as he's waged a one-man war against Scientology's Narconon drug treatment center in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Sunday evening, news began to leak that one of Love's numerous complaints about the treatment center to Canadian authorities was paying off: Quebec health officials ordered the facility closed immediately, even as Narconon appeals the government's finding that it failed miserably in an attempt to get certification for its unscientific methods of treating drug addiction.

Since the news broke, Love has been talking to Canadian journalists as they scrambled to get details on the sudden closing, which came with no advance public word from health officials.
After more than two years of telling his own story of witnessing fraud and abuse at the center, and relentlessly pursuing Canadian authorities with more than 3,700 pages of documents he had amassed about the facility, Love was still in some shock that his work had suddenly, and so spectacularly, paid off. "We weren't expecting this," he admitted. [cont at link]
