Today/Tonight: Cook Accused of Poisoning Tom Cruise [video]

VillageVoice ~ Australia's Bryan Seymour has produced some of that country's biggest scoops about Scientology in recent years, and he has a diverting item in this Today Tonight piece about Lana Mitchell, who helped to lavish gourmet meals on Scientology leader David Miscavige at the church's secretive desert headquarters in California -- until, that is, she was accused of feeding a bad shrimp to Tom Cruise, and as a result lost her job, lost her family, and lost her friends.

In her interview with Seymour, she explains that as Miscavige's cook, it was her job to lavish on the church leader gourmet meals every few hours, and especially when Miscavige's good friend Tom Cruise showed up. But when Cruise got food poisoning from a bad shrimp, Mitchell says she was unfairly blamed, and found herself cut off not only from her job, but also from her friends and family.[more]

OZ Govt Anti-drug Campaign's 'Worrying' Link to Scientology

List of many non-profit organizations that are closely linked to Scientology. Many of these organizations describe themselves as brisbanetimes ~ Concerns have been raised about a partnership between the Federal Government and a drug awareness group run by members of the controversial Church of Scientology.

Corporate lawyer and researcher Grainne O’Donovan said the partnership could potentially be used by the church, through Drug Free Ambassadors Australia (DFAA), to try to recruit members from schools and youth groups.

The DFAA - sponsored by Scientology - is a partner in the government’s National Compact set up by former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd in March within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The DEEWR website says the National Compact is an agreement between government and "not-for-profit" community organizations to provide "real input into government policy and program delivery".
Professor Ian Hickie
Ms O’Donovan said it was “worrying” that the DFAA was in a position to influence government policy, considering serious widespread concerns about its practices. "They are citing the entry on the government’s Harm Prevention Register in written materials, giving the impression they are a government-approved charity," she said. “The ambassadors aren’t just against illegal drugs they are also against approved medical drugs and psychiatry."

Professor Ian Hickie [photo], a psychiatrist and executive director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute, said some of the DFAA’s information was "entirely inappropriate and ill-informed". He added the group confused illicit drugs and medically-approved ones and its website implied national endorsement of "this disreputable position".

Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association president, Norm Fuller said the DFAA material about illegal drugs "gives some relevant information". "The material associated with prescription drugs sends a different message that would need to be questioned," he said."The fact that this material is associated with a specific group, such as the Church of Scientology, brings into question their reasons and purpose." Australian Heroin Diaries: Foundation For A Drug Free World
Australian National Archives: The 'Australian Heroin Diaries' was selected for preservation by the National Library of Australia. The FDFW is run by the Church of Scientology and is closely linked to the youth orientated Drug-Free Marshals program or Drug-Free Ambassadors as it’s called in Australia. You may have heard of Carly Crutchfield, Scientologist, Drug Free Ambassador and real estate investment adviser.

The blurring of who is who and who runs what is how the Church of Scientology can sneak into schools and community groups when needed or promote their church when they want publicity. Maybe that’s why the campaign commercials and booklets are readily available at the Scientology website but the link to Scientology hardly gets a mention at FDFW. The official blurb for FDFW from their website is:
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a secular, nonprofit organization that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions to be drug-free.
Secular? factual information? Like all front groups for Scientology, it’s really about expanding the flock. [more >>>]

TodayTonight: Australia's Narconon/Scientology Connection

Narconon: Hubbard's Junk Science
L. Ron Hubbard takes an extreme line on the benefit of drugs of all kinds. A wide range of otherwise innocuous drugs, including aspirin and caffeine, are lumped together with recognisably dangerous substances such as heroin and LSD. Narconon's explanation of drug effects relies on Scientology dogma rather than science.

l ron hubbard junk scienceHubbard also claims, in defiance of known medical science, that non-fat-soluble drugs and toxins can also be stored in and released from fatty tissue. The most glaring example is of alcohol, a water-soluble drug which is flushed out of the body in a matter of hours (as anyone who has done a bar crawl will have discovered when their bladder begins to complain).

It is physically impossible for alcohol to be stored in body fat. Despite this, Hubbard still refers to "people have [who] reported re-experiencing various effects of past drugs, medicine, alcohol or other stimulants or sedatives." This is a perfect example of Hubbard's sloppy and unscientific research - because people reported re-experiencing the effects of alcohol, it must actually be alcohol that they were re-experiencing, despite the awkward fact that alcohol is not stored in the body.

Hubbard also made fundamental mistakes about the nature of niacin. The vitamin is supposed to stimulate the release of fat into the bloodstream in order to flush out "stored" drugs. In fact, large doses of niacin actually block the release of fat from fat cells; as an antilipidemic, it is probably the last substance one would use for Hubbard's declared purpose.

Most abused drugs are eliminated from the body by detoxification through the liver, the kidney, or occasionally the lungs. Even if Hubbard's therapy did manage to flush toxins out of fat tissue and into the bloodstream, they would pass through the kidneys and so be excreted in urine. They would have no chance to enter the sweat glands en masse. This point is usually glossed over by Narconon's handful of medical supporters. [more >>>]

TodayTonight: OZ Clamps Down On Charity Tax Hustlers [video]

Charities Commission: charitable groups must now prove accountability
xenophon on scientology cult tax abc.net.au ~ A federal parliamentary committee has recommended the creation of a charities commission. The commission would ensure charitable and religious organisations were open and transparent.

They would also need to be able to prove they deserved a charitable status. Independent Senator Nick Xenophon has welcomed bipartisan support for the commission, saying organisations such as the Church of Scientology are on notice. "I believe reform is now inevitable. We can't continue to have business as usual when it comes to organisations that have been beyond any reasonable level of accountability," Mr Xenophon said. He believes reform in the sector is inevitable.

"This inquiry came about because of legislation I introduced for a public benefit test for religions and charities, and it was as a direct result of being approached by many victims of the Church of Scientology," said the Senator, and adds,"Their evidence, their complaints played a key role in triggering this inquiry."

TodayTonight: Scientology Continues 'Creep-Factor' Down Under [video]

today tonight TodayTonight/WWP ~ TodayTonight, an Aussie news magazine, airs another story on the creep-factor Scientology generates in their country.

This installment includes Jan Eastgate, a top CCHR (Scientology's Citizens Commission on Human Rights International) executive accused of covering up child sexual abuse that occurred in the past inside the church. TodayTonight demonstrates how she dodges the press when confronted with the accusations by the, now adult, abused.

Also filmed were Scientology handlers that showed up to intimidate ex-scientologists that were meeting Australian politicians, including Senator Nick Xenophon, at parliament house.

And of course, the creep-factor wouldn't be complete without Scientology recruiters attempting to sway an up-and-coming film star, Ryan Kwanten, into joining the ranks of their dwindling brainwashed Hollywood elite.

Scientology Caught Playing International 'Corporate Shell Game' [video]

unpaid british taxes adelaidenow.com.au ~ THE Church of Scientology says allegations it is using Adelaide as an off-shore base for its international operations to avoid paying tax are "offensive". [cont]

todaytonight ~ Ten years ago authorities in Britain told the Church of Scientology it would have to pay tax, that it was not a charity. To avoid paying tax in the UK it's alleged they made the entire Church of Scientology in Britain a member of a tiny little association incorporated here in South Australia.

From its non-existent offices in Adelaide the tiny incorporated association boasts as its members, not people, but Churches of Scientology from the United Kingdom, Denmark, Belgium, France, Holland, Germany and Sweden. They have a member in South Africa too.

Today Tonight discovered [see video] a global multinational corporation boasting more members in Canada, including Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and British Columbia.

Senator XenophonIt might also be fate that in Scientology's universe of planetary confederates and intergalactic warlords, they chose Adelaide, the city of Churches.

The Independent Senator Nick Xenophon is one of South Australia's favourite sons. He championed the former members of Scientology who spoke out about the abuse inflicted on them. This latest intrigue surprised even him.

"Given what now has been revealed, you need to ask some very serious questions about how this group operates internationally in terms of the flow of money, where the money goes and how it's treated in terms of its tax free status," Senator Xenophon said. "It's a case of follow the money and also show me the money."

The Senator adds, "I'd like to think the corporate regulators in the UK will be scratching their heads over this one. To say that the Church of Scientology in the UK is a South Australian charity seems pretty bizarre when you look at the evidence." [cont]

OZ:FWO Investigating Scientology Labor Practices [archive video]

Fair Work Ombudsman Looks Into Church of Scientology Employment Practices
AU: Fair Work Ombudsman news.com.au ~ The industrial inspectorate has confirmed it is investigating the employment practices of the Church of Scientology.

Nicholas Wilson of Fair Work Ombudsman, who ensures compliance with Commonwealth workplace laws, told a Senate estimates hearing it had looked into the controversial religious group but declined to give details.

The inspectorate has subsequently interviewed Scientology members along the east coast of Australia to establish whether they are being properly compensated for their church work.

Asked by independent Senator Nick Xenophon if children were working within the organization, the Fair Work Ombudsman was annoyingly unwilling to make a firm statement. "We don't confirm or deny whether that is likely what they're doing," Mr Wilson told the Senate hearing. "As a matter of policy, the assertion that ... children are underpaid in and of itself means nothing to the investigation."

The Senate economics committee is expected to hear evidence from former Scientology members in late June. It's receiving submissions into a possible public benefits test for charitable and religious groups after Senator Xenophon moved a private senator's bill in May.

Senator Xenophon Wants You To Be AwesomeATT: Ex-Scientologists (worldwide):

Alligations of Systemic Child Abuse Within Scientology [video]

Calls for Judicial Inquiry into Scientology
Scarlett Hanna, Vicki Dunstan, Mark HannaWest Australian ~ Independent senator Nick Xenophon has called for a judicial inquiry into the Church of Scientology following further claims of systematic abuse of members.

The daughter of the president of the Church of Scientology in Australia has claimed many children who have grown up in the organization have been subjected to physical and emotional abuse. Scarlett Hanna, whose mother Vicki Dunstan is the president of the group in Australia, has alleged children, including herself, were separated from their parents, denied food and healthcare and subjected to psychological abuse.

Ms Hanna, in an interview on ABC Television on Tuesday night, said she was separated from her father for a number of years, after he was sent overseas by the organization as a form of punishment. She also said children were forced to live apart from their parents in groups of up to 25, and that children were made to feel like "cattle".

Senator Nick XenophonXenophon states,"Too many people have come forward with sickening tales of systemic abuse within this organization,". The allegations made by Ms Hanna were so serious that a judicial inquiry with the powers of a Royal Commission was needed to investigate the activities of the church. "We have allegations of child abuse, coerced abortions, false imprisonment, bullying and extortion. Surely the victims of Scientology deserve a proper inquiry," the Senator added.

The Church of Scientology said the claims made by Ms Hanna were between her and her family and refused to comment directly on the allegations.

More Abuse Down at the OT Corral
Palmdale, CAAstra Woodcraft Interview / Part Five:The Mace Kingsley Ranch [realmedia]
Astra: Before I was in the Sea Organization, I was about 13. And there was a place called the Mace Kingsley Ranch. It was in Palmdale, about 30 minutes outside of Los Angeles. And it was run by a man named Wally Hanks who was OTVII. He was one of the highest level Scientologists. He was very well known and revered and he used to do briefings to people on how to handle their children.

And a lot of the children at Mace Kingsley Ranch were considered problem children. Their parents had gone into the Sea Org and they [the children] wouldn't go. Or their parents were in Scientology and they [the children] didn't want to be in Scientology. For one reason or another, they were considered a problem child.

I [Astra] had had a few beers and so had he [Wally]. And so had everyone else. And he put his hand down my shirt and down my bra and started feeling me. And I…it really scared me and I asked my friend later, I said, "What's Wally doing? Why did he do this?" And she said, "Oh. Don't worry. He just does that with the girls. That's just what he does but don't worry about it."

Astra: Well, because he was an OTVII, they had said they weren't going to declare him officially because it would be bad public relations for people to hear that an OTVII molested children and got declared. So, they quietly ousted him from the Church. They quietly said, he's declared.

wally hanks Stacy (interviewer): But did they report him to the authorities?

Astra: No. They never reported him…at least not to my knowledge. The report said nothing about it. They said…it was a handling. It's, like, "he's been doing this and what we're going to do is we're going to oust him but we're not going to officially declare him. We're not going to tell people about it because it's bad public relations" because he was an OTVII.

Astra: And, just anytime you did something wrong, you were paddled. Wally was a very big man and he had a paddle. And all of us would sit around-this happened the first time I went up there to visit-sit around on the sofa and the person who is being paddled stood in the middle of the room and Wally would paddle them with this paddle. And it made them cry. And then he would put a little notch on it for paddling them and that was the punishment. [complete transcript]

The Church of Scientology is bringing down the hammer on a renegade member who alleges leader David Miscavige loves to gossip about his star parishioners. But it seems Miscavige "is known to pride himself on having memorized the sexual irregularities of practically every staff member" at one church facility - sometimes teasing them about their kinks in front of others. Hummmm, pot-kettle?

Officials privately grilled church members who work for celeb Scientologists to check whether the celebs were "deviating" from "Scientology's moral code."

Church spokesman Tommy Davis brands all of Scobee's claims as "fiction." He insists Miscavige's purported dish session "never happened. Nobody in the church has ever violated the priest-penitent privilege. ... [confessional files] are held in the strictest confidence."

Scobee brings up a very good point: "If confessionals are never violated, what's Tommy [Davis] doing talking about my sex life?" [much more @ nydaily news]

Senator Xenophon Argues Scientology Isn't Above the Law

The letters from former members that Xenophon introduced in Parliament on Tuesday night included allegations of torture and the horrible tale of one man who lost two children to what he claims are Scientology-related accidents.

The victims’ statements have been referred to police by Senator Xenophon, who argued it was now time for Federal Parliament to delve into the church and re-evaluate its tax-exemption status.

Scientology's 'narCONon' Director Found Guilty

Head of Scientologist “Narconon” center sentenced in Pavlodar
narconon guilty
Translation of kt.kz [Kazakhstan Today]: Pavlodar. November 25. Kazakhstan Today – The widely-noted trial of the “Narconon” center, which is connected with the religious Scientology organization, ended today in Pavlodar, reports the Kazakhstan Today news agency.

Pavlodar City Court Number 2 issued a guilty verdict against the 25-year-old director of the "Narconon" center and sentenced her to a heavy fine of 7,700 dollars*. The court stated that the convicted defendant has the right to legally appeal the decision within 15 days.

As previously reported, the defendant was charged under Article 190 of the Kazakhstan Criminal Code (illegal business activity). According to the charges, the Narconon rehabilitation and educational center where she worked was engaged in the illegal practice of medicine and provided services to persons suffering from drug or alcohol addiction.

Evgeniya TarkhanovaThe trial was the result of operations carried out on November 20, 2008 by the Department of Economic Crimes and Corruption. The financial police found that the “Narconon” center had archives containing almost a thousand files labeled “confidential” concerning persons who received services.

In addition, during the search, police seized “accounting documents, 134 packages containing various kinds of medicinal preparations that did not specify the country of origin, a large number of Scientology-oriented books, a program describing the 'Purification' course, a program for the application of medicinal preparations, advertising and promotional materials."

narconon-kazakhstanIn all, police seized more than 60 boxes of documents, religious literature, and medicinal preparations not registered in Kazakhstan. The financial police reported that "Narconon" patients were misled and that the money received by the organization's leadership was labeled as voluntary donations.

"The forensic chemical analyses of the substances seized during searches concluded that all the substances under investigation, with few exceptions, were medicinal preparations (vitamins, dietary supplements, food products) that are not registered in the state registry of medicines of the Republic of Kazakhstan and that their use in the territory of Kazakhstan is prohibited. The therapeutic doses of active substances in certain vitamins and dietary supplements greatly exceeded the permissible limits," said the financial police.

Today Tonight (AU): Scientology Under Fire [video]

Scientology faces allegations of torture (among other things) in Australia

Guardian: The Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, has said he would consider an inquiry into the Church of Scientology after a senator tabled allegations against the organisation including forced abortions, assault, torture, imprisonment, covering up sexual abuse, embezzlement of church funds and blackmail.

Senator Nick Xenophon tabled letters from former officials and staff of the Church of Scientology alleging criminal activity, and demanded a review of the organisation's tax exempt status.

"Scientology is not a religious organisation, it is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs," he told the senate.

Among the letters tabled was one written by Aaron Saxton, from Perth, who said he engaged in torture and blackmail while working for the church in Australia and at its American headquarters between 1989 and 1996.

Rudd said the allegations were "grave" and that he would consider an inquiry, but said the evidence needed to be looked at carefully. "Many people in Australia have real concerns about Scientology. I share some of those concerns. But let us proceed carefully, and look carefully at the material which he has provided, before we make a decision on further parliamentary action," Rudd said.
